ketamine misconceptions legality safety

For many people who are just learning about them, the realm of ketamine therapy and ketamine infusions is completely new. Many are looking for simple information about this treatment format, and it's important to talk to experts here for a few reasons -- one of which is avoiding any misconceptions or incorrect information that might be floating around.

At A Mind's Journey, we're happy to not only provide South Jordan and other Utah clients with a range of ketamine treatments for depression, anxiety, PTSD and more, but also to offer detailed, accurate information on these treatments and what you can expect from them. In this two-part blog series, we'll separate certain unrealistic expectations regarding ketamine treatments -- on both sides of the spectrum, positive and negative -- from reality, helping anyone considering such treatments to understand what to expect and how to approach such forms of therapy.

Misconception: Ketamine Treatments Are a Miracle Cure for Anything

Because they're so new and have indeed had remarkable effects for some people, there's an impression among some that ketamine treatments can cure any mental health issue or problem. This is not the case; ketamine therapies are not a "miracle cure." Rather, they are one potential tool in a therapist's toolbox that can be effective for certain people with specific issues.

It's important that those receiving ketamine treatments have realistic expectations about what they can expect from the therapy. This means that a ketamine infusion is not going to miraculously cure your depression, anxiety or PTSD -- but it may help to provide significant relief when combined with other therapies.

Misconception: Ketamine is a Harmful, Illegal Drug

On the flip side, there are some people who approach ketamine therapies with suspicion and concern, based on the mistaken belief that ketamine is a harmful and illegal drug. This could not be further from the truth! Ketamine is a FDA-approved anesthetic and analgesic agent that has been safely used in both human and veterinary medicine for decades.

When used in a therapeutic setting, ketamine is administered in a very low dose and does not produce the "high" associated with recreational use of the drug. In fact, at A Mind's Journey we take great care to ensure that all of our ketamine infusions are given in a safe and comfortable setting.

Misconception: Ketamine Will Get Your Off All Other Medications

Again, this misconception is born of partial truth: It's true that some people who use SSRIs or benzodiazepines may be able to decrease or even eliminate their use of these medications after ketamine therapy. However, it's important to note that this is not always the case, and for some people ketamine therapy may actually increase their need for medication.

It's also important to keep in mind that everyone responds differently to ketamine treatments, so there is no guarantee that you will be able to reduce or stop taking your medications. Always consult with your doctor before making any changes to your medication regimen.

At A Mind's Journey, we're committed to providing accurate and up-to-date information on ketamine therapies to all our South Jordan clients. If you have any questions about ketamine or its potential benefits, please don't hesitate to contact us -- about this, or to set up an appointment.
